Namakarana

Namakarana is the naming ceremony of a newborn baby. Nama means name and Karanam means to make or to create. This ceremony is performed to select a newborn’s name using astrological rules or traditional methods of naming. This ceremony takes place after the 10-day impure postnatal period. The chosen name should contain a specified number of syllables and vowels that be easy to pronounce, sound pleasant, indicate sex, signify fame, wealth, or power. The ceremony is performed by whispering the name of a baby in the right ear and different mantras are chanted for the well-being of the baby. When to Perform Namakarana? It is performed on the 11th day from the Baby’s Birth. It is auspicious when performed in the morning. Benefits of Namakarana Pooja: Official Name is required for the identification of an individual and also for Sankalp purposes. The Namakarana Pooja is required to get permission from the supreme Lord to name the child and also to ward off evil spirits while naming the child which will be used by the child during its lifetime.

What is this ceremony

A samskara marks a threshold in one life, and is done once for each person. This is how it is done with intention rather than in a hurry.

The sequence differs by region and by family tradition — yours will be confirmed before the day. We describe what families usually observe; we never promise outcomes.

How is Namakarana booked, and what does it cost?

On House of Purohit, a verified Purohit performs Namakarana at your home in Bengaluru starting from ₹4,800, and the ceremony takes about 2h 30m. Frequently asked about Namakarana
What samagri is needed for Namakarana, and who brings it?
At home, the family usually arranges a few things — set up the cradle with new bedding; decide the name (we will share nakshatra syllables); new clothes for the baby and parents, and the rest of the list on this page. The ritual items themselves come in a samagri kit with the Standard and Elaborate packages; otherwise your Purohit sends the list ahead of the day.
Can Namakarana be done in a flat?
Yes — most ceremonies we arrange are in apartments. Tell us if the space is small, or if there are smoke alarms; where a fire ritual is part of it, your Purohit plans for the room you have.
What if the muhurat falls in Rahu kalam?
When you choose a date, each time window shows its muhurat and whether it overlaps Rahu kalam. Families usually avoid it where the day allows; if it cannot be avoided, your Purohit will say what your tradition does.
Who takes part in Namakarana?
A verified Purohit conducts it; the person or couple the ceremony is for sits for the sankalpa, and family may join. Nothing else is needed from you but the name said aloud at the start — and a gotra, if your family knows it.
How long does Namakarana take?
About 2h 30m, though this can vary with your family's tradition.
Can House of Purohit provide the Purohit?
Yes — a verified Purohit performs Namakarana at your home, with pricing shown before you book.
Is Namakarana available in Bengaluru?
Yes, in Bengaluru, from ₹4,800.
