Upanayana
Upanayana ceremony is a significant tradition among the Brahmins. Performing Upanayana makes the boy eligible for the study of the Vedas and scriptures and denotes the spiritual rebirth. The sacred thread is also worn by some Kshatriyas and Vaishya’s community people. A boy is said to be born twice when you perform Upanayana samskara and is called “Dwija”. One sacred thread contains 3 strands symbolizing the three debts, the debt to a teacher, the debt to parents and ancestors, the debt to God. The ceremony is performed beginning with Ganesha pooja, Punyaha Vachanam, Maha Sankalpam, Kalasha pooja, Udagashanti, or the sacred bath, Yagnopaveetam or Janeu is then worn to him and homa is performed as per Shastras and Vidhana. When to Perform Upanayana Ceremony? When the male child attains the age of 8 years this ceremony is performed by fixing a Muhurth based on the Birth Nakshatra of the boy. - Can Upanayana be done in a flat?
- Yes — most ceremonies we arrange are in apartments. Tell us if the space is small, or if there are smoke alarms; where a fire ritual is part of it, your Purohit plans for the room you have.
- What if the muhurat falls in Rahu kalam?
- When you choose a date, each time window shows its muhurat and whether it overlaps Rahu kalam. Families usually avoid it where the day allows; if it cannot be avoided, your Purohit will say what your tradition does.
- Who takes part in Upanayana?
- A verified Purohit conducts it; the person or couple the ceremony is for sits for the sankalpa, and family may join. Nothing else is needed from you but the name said aloud at the start — and a gotra, if your family knows it.
- How long does Upanayana take?
